Jose M. of TRUE BOERBOELS boasts over 40 years of extensive experience in breeding and selecting large dog breeds. Having started breeding dogs as a hobby many years ago, our primary goal is the careful selection and enhancement of the breed, ensuring a balance in all areas: morphology, functionality, character, and suitability as family, guard, and defense dogs. At True Boerboels, we raise our dogs on our farm, providing them with ample open space for exercise, which greatly benefits their character and emotional well-being. We maintain spacious kennels and never confine our dogs to small spaces.
Our selection process is rigorous, focusing on morphology and functionality, while placing significant emphasis on toughness, size, correctness, and character. We take pride in stating that our Boerboels are the only ones currently bred through natural mating, with our females giving birth without the need for C-sections (only resorting to artificial insemination when mating with an outside male).
Thanks to our strict selection criteria, our dogs can mate and give birth naturally, avoiding C-sections, which has helped us restore the breed’s natural toughness. We steer clear of modern artificial breeding practices, resulting in healthier, stronger dogs and significant savings on veterinary costs.
With a wealth of lifetime experience in breeding and selecting not just dogs, but also sheep, horses, cattle, and pigs, he began his journey by breeding high-quality Spanish Mastiffs at a young age, dedicating over twenty years to the breeding and selection of this particular breed.
Shortly after relocating to South Africa in 2005, where he established his home with his family on a Limpopo farm that they still inhabit today, he embarked on breeding Boerboels. His passion for the selection and enhancement of this remarkable South African breed grew, and he began working diligently with the Boerboels. With the assistance of his children, he started with outstanding dogs chosen from the finest traditional breeding lines in South Africa, employing genetics thoughtfully to select the best specimens to contribute to the improvement of this wonderful breed.
